BAGHDAD — The Iraq Energy Institute, a non-profit research organization that works on economic reform, energy and sustainable development, has opened offices on the campus of the American University of Iraq – Baghdad, the university announced on January 25, 2022.

The two institutions marked the opening by signing a memorandum of understanding that sets out a general framework for working toward shared goals.

They also said they would jointly host the sixth Iraq Energy Forum on the AUIB campus, together with multinational institutions including the International Energy Agency and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. According to the university, the forum was expected to coincide with a visit by OPEC's Secretary General and to mark the sixtieth anniversary of Iraq's role in founding OPEC in Baghdad.

"We are excited about the possibilities this partnership will have for the people of Iraq," said Dr. Michael Mulnix, then AUIB's president. Joint research, he said, "will improve AUIB's ranking while setting a high standard for local universities."

Dr. Gareth Stansfield, the institute's honorary president and a Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Exeter, said the institute "has published numerous publications, run many workshops, and founded the Iraq Energy Forum in Baghdad." He said the institute and the university aimed to support the new government's reforms of the energy sector and the passage of key federal legislation.

Sheikh Adnan Al Janabi, the institute's deputy chairman, spoke of Iraq's need for cooperation between research institutes, civil society and universities at home and abroad. The institute's motto is "Energize Iraq."

At the time, AUIB described itself as a non-profit university founded in 2018, with eight colleges.
