BAGHDAD — Students and graduates of the College of Law at the American University of Iraq – Baghdad presented proposals for environmental legislation to members of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, the university reported on July 19, 2026.
The presentations were part of the Youth Environmental Legal Leadership (YELL) Program, run by the Institute for International Law and Human Rights (IILHR) with the college. They were made to members of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, Water, and Marshes, the Parliamentary Legal Committee and the Parliamentary Committee on Investment and Development.
The draft laws covered more investment in waste recycling, legal frameworks for sustainable development, amendments to some existing laws, subjects not previously addressed in specialized legislation, and an independent environmental law meant to meet current challenges and follow international practice.
According to the university, the lawmakers praised the proposals' scientific and practical quality and agreed to take them forward with the relevant government bodies, including the Ministry of Environment. In the next phase, the students and graduates are to work directly with ministries and other authorities to refine the drafts.
