BAGHDAD — The American University of Iraq – Baghdad signed a memorandum of understanding with the Iraqi Alliance of Disability Organizations (IADO) at a ceremony on campus, the university reported on September 1, 2026.

The agreement, signed by AUIB's president, Dr. Bradley Cook, and IADO's head, Moaffak Alkhafaji, lays the foundation for cooperation in "inclusive education, disability rights, academic excellence," as well as community engagement, research and institutional development.

"AUIB has a responsibility that extends beyond the classroom," Dr. Cook said, describing a responsibility to students, the university community and the Iraqi public. He praised the resolve and optimism of AUIB students with disabilities.

Alkhafaji spoke about the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, adopted in 2006, and said his organization's campaign led Iraq's Parliament to ratify it in 2013, moving state institutions toward a human-rights approach in areas from sport to political participation.

The university did not announce specific programs or a timeline under the agreement.
